Sibu Mabena (born 25 October 1991) is a South African businesswoman and creative. She is the founder of Duma Collective. She has extensive experience in event production acquisition, performance direction, sponsorship, and street and social media marketing. 

Mabena is all about creating an oasis for African creativity to flourish. She works behind the scenes on some of the biggest hip-hop concerts. She took the initiative to launch her PR and multimedia business, Duma Collective, in 2017.

Early Life

Sibu Mabena was born on 25 October 1991 in Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa, to Leah Madalane and Obbey Mabena. She weighed 2.56kg at birth. Her mother would fetch her from school by 5 PM, allowing her enough time to attend dance classes with her friend.

At 10, she entered a dance competition in Germany. She became a member of dance crews and choreographed shows for events.

Sibu Mabena holds a Bachelor in Political Sciences and International Relations at the University of Pretoria. 

Career

Sibu Mabena founded Duma Collective while doing an undergraduate degree. She has worked with top celebrities such as Cassper Nyovest. Her agency manages Natasha Tshahane, Luthando Shosha, Reason, K.O., Solo & The BETR Gang, The Muffinz, Sne Mbatha, and DotCom.

Starting as a freelancer in the communication and media space, Mabena invested cash she made in her part-time gigs to fund her business. The business now employs 40 full-time staff members.

Mabena has worked on many local live events shows, such as South Africa Music Awards, South African Film and Television Awards, and Metro FM Awards. 

Sibu also worked on the GLO CAF Awards, MTV Base Africa Awards, Castle Lite Presents J Cole and Axecess Jozi, SAB Conference, and South African Sports Awards.

Some of her television work includes the 2017 AFCON TVC, Revlon’s Special Feeling TVC, and MTV Base Lip Sync Battle. Her agency boasts of having clients like MultiChoice, NBA Africa, Sasol, and DStv.

Mabena rebranded Mbuduma Communications into Duma Collective in 2017. Duma Collective brand focuses on campaigns, conceptualizing and producing TV commercials and promos. It also does events, social media and digital activations, marketing strategies, and PR and communication campaigns.

Her agency began to create online events in the first year of lockdown. Her company specializes in creative communication by connecting brands to their target audience. It empowers 150 freelancers on a month-to-month basis.

Mabena has been working since she was fifteen. She has launched a reputation and network for herself. She began as a freelancer, and her first job was teaching kids how to dance and babysitting during school holidays at the aftercare at school. 

Dancing connected her to many brand managers and brand custodians. She worked with people in eventing and freelancing for them. She appeared on The Mail & Guardian’s Top 200 Young South Africans in 2018.

Mabena won the Prestigious Inverroche Future Is Female Award in 2023. She sealed a deal with another agency, M&N Brands. Duma Collective clientele footprint reaches the USA and the Middle East. The company purchased its first vehicle in 2010.
